Terroir & Climate
At 15 metres above sea level, Avt Natural Products Limited occupies low-lying terrain in Kerala, where the tropical climate and proximity to sea level typically shape a distinctive growing environment. Estates at this elevation in southern India generally experience warm, humid conditions year-round, with the interplay of the south-west and north-east monsoons influencing the seasonal flush cycle. Low-altitude sites tend to support vigorous vegetative growth, though the intensity of heat and moisture can also place demands on plant health management.
The latitude of approximately 10° north places the estate firmly within the equatorial belt, where day length varies minimally across the year and temperatures remain relatively stable. This consistency tends to support continuous cropping rather than the sharply defined dormancy periods seen in higher-latitude or higher-elevation gardens. Soils in the Aluva region are often influenced by riverine and alluvial deposits, which can vary in drainage and fertility; such factors typically play a significant role in determining leaf yield and the character of the raw material produced.
Tea Produced
The estate produces black tea. At low elevations in Kerala, black teas typically exhibit a robust, full-bodied character with moderate astringency. The warm, humid growing conditions at or near sea level tend to encourage rapid leaf development, often yielding teas with strength and colour rather than the pronounced floral or aromatic complexity more commonly associated with high-grown gardens. Such teas are generally well-suited to blending and to markets that value consistency and body in the cup.
