Terroir & Climate
At 5 metres elevation, Tokkoen sits in the low-lying coastal zone of Kagoshima-City, in Japan's southernmost major tea-producing prefecture. Estates at this latitude and altitude generally experience a warm, humid subtropical climate with ample rainfall distributed across the year. The proximity to sea level typically means milder winter temperatures and an earlier flush compared to highland estates, though the risk of spring frost can still influence timing of the first harvest.
The warm growing conditions common to Kagoshima's coastal belt tend to encourage vigorous vegetative growth and can support multiple harvests through the season. Estates in this environment often benefit from deep alluvial or volcanic soils, and the gentle temperatures generally allow for steady accumulation of amino acids in young shoots, particularly when bushes are shaded in the lead-up to premium harvests.
Tea Produced
Tokkoen produces green tea, the dominant category across Japan's commercial estates. Kagoshima's lower-elevation gardens typically yield a style that balances vegetal freshness with a rounded, subtly sweet character, particularly when processed as sencha or fukamushi-sencha. The warmer growing conditions common to the region often result in teas with accessible umami and a softer astringency compared to some higher-altitude or more northerly production zones, though processing choices and cultivar selection remain the principal determinants of cup profile.
