Makaibari Tea Estate

Kurseong Valley, West Bengal • Established 1859 • Organic Certified

Direct Answer: Makaibari Tea Estate is a historic, high-elevation tea garden located in the Kurseong Valley of Darjeeling, India. Established in 1859, it is globally recognized as the world's first tea factory and the pioneer of organic, biodynamic tea farming. Situated at an altitude of 1,500 meters, its steep Himalayan terroir and predominantly Camellia sinensis var. sinensis cultivars produce highly aromatic, muscatel-forward Black and White teas.

Geographical Terroir & Climate

The flavor profile of any Darjeeling tea is strictly dictated by the aggressive Himalayan climate. At 1,500 meters (4,900 feet) above sea level, Makaibari experiences drastic diurnal temperature shifts—blistering sun during the day and freezing temperatures at night. This stress forces the tea bushes to slow their growth, accumulating complex aromatic oils and polyphenols rather than rapidly expanding leaf mass.

Cultivars & Harvesting

Unlike the Assam valley plains which utilize the broad-leafed assamica varietal, Makaibari primarily relies on traditional, small-leaf Camellia sinensis var. sinensis bushes, many of which are over 100 years old. The deep, loamy acidic soil (pH 4.5 - 5.5) creates the perfect bedrock for these ancient roots.

The estate is famous for its distinct flush cycles. The First Flush (March-April) yields a light, bright, intensely floral liquor. The highly coveted Second Flush (May-June) develops the signature "Muscatel" flavor—a rich, fruity characteristic caused by jassid insects biting the leaves, triggering a defensive chemical reaction before harvest.

Recommended Brewing Parameters

For Makaibari Second Flush Black Tea, we recommend a slightly cooler temperature to preserve the delicate muscatel aromatics.
