Hot Toddy Recipe: The Whiskey & Tea Cold Cure

★★★★★ (4.9 from 58 Reviews)
Jump to Recipe ↓

It is the grandfather of all hot cocktails. The Hot Toddy is famously touted as a cure for the common cold, or at least a way to make it more bearable. The warmth soothes the throat, the lemon provides Vitamin C, the honey coats the membranes, and the whiskey... well, the whiskey helps you sleep.

While traditional recipes use just hot water, using Black Tea (like a bold Assam or citrusy Earl Grey) adds depth, tannins, and antioxidants, transforming it from a watered-down drink into a robust winter warmer.

Instructions

1
Brew the Tea: Place the tea bag (and spices if using) into a heat-proof mug. Pour the boiling water over it. Let it steep for 3-5 minutes depending on how strong you like it. Remove the tea bag.
2
Sweeten: While the tea is still hot, stir in the honey until it is completely dissolved.
3
Spike & Sour: Add the whiskey and the fresh lemon juice. Stir gently.
4
Garnish: Add a cinnamon stick or a slice of lemon (you can stud the rind with cloves for extra aroma). Serve immediately while steaming hot.

Expert Tip: The Alcohol-Free Version

Want the cold-busting benefits without the booze? Swap the whiskey for 1 tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar or just omit it entirely. You can also add a slice of fresh ginger to the steep for an extra immune boost.
